The North Sea Canal (Noordzeekanaal) is a Dutch ship canal from Amsterdam to the North Sea at Ijmuiden. The canal is an important route for migrating fish species. Artificial barriers in the canal, like dams, sluices and weirs lead to habitat loss and fragmentation.

The continued existence of migratory fish species is threatened by artificial barriers. Migration routes go through different regions represented by different water authorities. Because of that, every water authority is responsible for just a part of the migration route. Cooperation and tuning between authorities are needed and will result in additional benefits. Possible opportunities are monitoring, knowledge development, external finance, and common support.
Assignment
LINKit consult and Wanningen Water Consult started with analyzing the current state of migratory fish in North Sea Canal. Together with current policy and future guidelines, the analysis has been integrated in a program. The program contains subject as: Accessibility, habitats, monitoring, recreation and communications. Subsequently an action plan/roadmap had been formed, to guide successful implementation.
